It has seemingly become a standard practice for people to google each other. Employers in particular seem to think this is a great way to determine if they want to hire someone. It’s certainly interesting to see all the digital footprints I have left in my life so far, so, here’s a little tour of my self-obsession, with some insights as to what I was up to “way back when.”
What Google says about: “Hans Cathcart” and “Hans A Cathcart“.
Flying with Hans « Fiid’s Blog
- A few years ago, my good friend Fiid and I took a Diamond Star for a scenic flight around the San Francisco Bay Area. Fiid documented the experience on his blog. Given that he took up flight training later that year, I think he liked our little trip.
ECMgt.com Dec1999 E-Zine: Feature Article by Hans Cathcart - 1999 …
- During the late 90s, I served in a number of leadership roles of the Silicon Valley WebGuild, where I lead a group of like-minded volunteers in putting on interesting events for the webmasters of Silicon Valley. Our proudest achievement was getting both a representative from Microsoft and Netscape in the same room to discuss the pros and cons of their browsers.
- Mitch Levy asked me to write a feature article for his E-Zine. I was already a huge advocate for Linux in those days and had quite a bit of fun advocating for the open source operating system.
[nyphp-talk] NYC economy for web developers
- While I was living in NYC in 2002, I was a member of and volunteer for the NYC PHP User’s Group. This is a really great User Group which continues to put on monthly meetings.
THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary …
- I got to meet President Bill Clinton at College Press day in 1995. That was cool. I got to shake his hand and ask him a question. Don’t even ask me what I asked him, I was so nervous I might have even asked the question in German. I do remember one of the other students telling him a joke.
Contest for holiday-dressed sites | CNET News.com
- For two years we had a contest at the WebGuild where we would award prizes to people who put up creative graphics on their web site for the holiday season. CNET News.com covered our event one year.
Future Demands on Nile River Water and Egyptian National Security
- To finish up my BA degree I took a really interesting class with Prof. James Lee. This was one of my projects. My group also did a video which I hope to post to YouTube some day.
- In life, it is critically important to have fun… and this seemingly ridiculous thought for how to have some fun got enough wind under its wings to become an event covered by a New York Times reporter.
- I was a member of the Silicon Valley Linux User’s Group back in the late 90s, and at that time Microsoft decided to open the Silicon Valley Development Center. I suggested to my fellow Linux friends that we ought to “welcome” Microsoft to the Silicon Valley.
- The Palo Alto Times ran this story after the event. And Rick Moen’s write-up is probably the most humorous.
Mid-Atlantic Linux Mailing Lists, Archives by Month: Re: [Pilot …
- Internet blogs have a way of spreading rumors faster than the speed of light. Here was one of my attempts to let truth run after rumors.
Online graphics copyright issues
- Back in the very early days of the World Wide Web, 1995-ish, I created the first web site for The American University student newspaper The Eagle. As part of creating the first graphics for the site, I copied the design for a single header graphic from another pioneering online magazine, the Trinity College Journal. One of the founders of the Journal decided to make a federal case out of it, and hence it was the first time in my life that I was publicly scolded on the Web for something I had done online. It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that I was actually the first person to be bashed on a blog. Funny stuff.
- The really humorous thing about the incident was that my close friend Frank was one of the other editors there, and this little disagreement could have easily been handled privately, however, the editor wanted to make a case about on-line copyright violations, and he used me as a punching bag. It was in no sense of the word even close to being a legal violation, in magnitude far less obvious than how Google and Yahoo copy each other’s search page designs. If you had seen the graphics you’d be laughing yourself silly now.

- Back in 1995, I used to post to the Quantum Leap fan’s Usenet group. Boy that was a fun sci-fi show.
- Small claim to fame here. One of my letters to the editor was posted on Salon.

- I’m a huge fan of Edward Tufte. And he would love the Time-travel map of the London subway system too. Here’s one of my “hey that’s cool” posts.

- I’m part of the Yahoo DCPilots mailing list. It’s a pretty cool forum for pilots in the DC area.
